The NASW Code Of Ethics The National Association Of Social Work has a long history in the United States. A code of ethics was developed by a delegate of social workers for social workers to live by. The delegate has revised the code many times since its development in 1960. The NASW Delegate Assembly first agreed on the Code of Ethics on October 30, 1960. The document embodied the duties of the social work profession and the responsibilities of each social worker. American values have changed many times. As a democratic nation, we advocate for humanitarian ideals and the equal treatment of our citizens. â€Å"Social work is based on humanitarian, democratic ideals.† According to the original 1960 code of ethics, â€Å"professional social workers are dedicated to the service for the welfare of mankind; to the disciplined use of a recognized body of knowledge about human beings and their interactions, and to the marshaling of community resources to promote well-being without d iscrimination.† This is a long quote but, I believe it perfectly encompasses what it means to live in a fair and democratic nation. Although America still had many civil rights issues at the time, a system such as this could not develop in a communist or dictatorship nation. There comes great responsibility in being a social worker. We work very closely with the community and because of this we must be vigilant in analyzing how we treat others and ways we could improve service.
